Dr Mark Stieler
General Practitioner · MB. BCh., BSc(Hons), MRCGP, FRACGP
Now welcoming new patients
Dr Mark Stieler brings a 40-year career across emergency departments in Australia, New Zealand and Wales, and GP clinics throughout WA, including remote Indigenous communities. Raised in a small slate-mining village in North Wales, he believes good general practice starts with listening, and treats the person or family, not just the problem.
Dr Stieler has a particular interest in healthy ageing, helping people turn their aspirations for later life into reality and keep doing the things that make life enjoyable. He is also an advocate for the significant health benefits of menopause hormone therapy.
He practises evidence-based medicine and takes care with our shared medical resources, but knows good health care is not simply about following guidelines. It is about applying the best available evidence to the person being cared for. In a tsunami of health advice and opinion, part of his role is helping patients cut through the noise and work out what is genuinely worthwhile. When he doesn’t know the answer, he will do the reading.
Humour has an important place in medicine too: a consultation doesn’t always have to be serious to be serious about someone’s health. His worldview is centred on grace, equal worth and the belief that everyone deserves a safe, completely non-judgmental space to seek care.
“Taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, isn’t it? If you’re comfortable while you’re doing it, you’re probably doing it wrong.”Ted Lasso
